* * * *

Jonny barely suppressed his growl when Russ and Mitch walked into Kapheri’s Koffee Korner where he was having coffee with Hank and a few of the others from the fire station. Russ was out to torture him. It was as simple as that. The roller coaster ride was turning into an oncoming train.

Russ kept showing up wherever Jonny was. If he went out to dinner at the Cade Creek Café, Russ came in for a burger. If he went to cooking class, Russ was there. If he went to the farmer’s market, he bumped into Russ. Hell, the guy had even started going to church, sitting in a pew across the aisle from Jonny, which mysteriously always seemed to be empty, no matter where Jonny sat.

It was a conspiracy. It had to be. There was no other way that Russ could know that much about Jonny’s whereabouts. Well, not unless someone had stuck a tracking device in his ass, and he hadn’t gotten any action since he slept with Russ.

No matter how much he tried.

He had been to the bar a few times in the last month and hadn’t even gotten a nibble. It was like there was this huge bubble around him, one that no one crossed into. At this point, he doubted he could get a date with a weed-whacker.

“Hey, Russ, Mitch,” Hank called out as he raised his hand in the air, “come join us.”

God, no!

Jonny groaned when both men waved and made their way over to the table after getting their coffee. Russ didn’t sit down next to Jonny, but across the table at the very end. There were no less than four men between them, and yet Jonny felt like Russ was practically on top of him.

His chest ached with the need to draw in clean fresh air.

Jonny grabbed his coffee and stood. “I’m going to head back to the station.” He didn’t wait for anyone to say anything, just hurried out of the coffee shop.

“Hey, Jonny, wait up a moment.”

Damn.

Jonny stopped, squeezing his eyes closed when he heard Russ’s voice. He pressed his hand against his chest, wishing he could breathe.

“Hey, glad I caught up with you,” Russ said from right behind him.

Jonny opened his eyes and plastered a smile on his face. “What’s up?”

“Elliot wanted to know if you could babysit the kids this Saturday around six. He and Mitch want to go out to dinner.”

“Oh, yeah.” Jonny relaxed. This was a perfectly innocent conversation. No reason to get tense because Russ was standing there looking at him with those big dreamy caramel-colored eyes. “I suppose I can do that.”

“Great. I have plans otherwise I would.”

Plans?

“No problem.” Why did Jonny suddenly feel like he wanted to bite something?

“Thanks. I’ll let Elliot know. Be good, Jonny.”

Jonny expected Russ to say more so he was a little confused when the man simply turned and walked back to the coffee shop. Once again he was left standing there feeling as though he had just bought a ticket on a roller coaster ride.
